Considerations when integrating with SAP +

How Cloud Elements reduces the pain for developers

What You Should Know About SAP’s APIs

SAP is a powerful ERP solution with a similarly powerful API. In fact, SAP estimates that more than 75% of all global transactions touch their applications. SAP’s suite of products supports mission-critical enterprise needs such as ERP, finance, digital supply chain, human capital management, and customer experience. Additionally, SAP BusinessOne is designed for small and medium businesses. For other software applications, integration to SAP goes hand-in-hand with serving global enterprises.

SAP is typically highly-customized for each customer and many instances still run on-prem. Before you begin building an integration, here are a few things you should know:

The on-prem deployments of R/3, ECC, and S/4 require a BAPI connector (Business Application Programming Interface). ‘BAPIs’ wrap the internal layers of SAP’s business object model; ensure that user auth, business logic, and data validations execute when accessing or changing business objects; and are ‘released’ by SAP. SAP developers call BAPIs using the Advanced Business Application Programming (ABAP) language and external applications use the Java connector.

On-Prem Deployments

SAP product names map to releases; some enterprises run SAP R/3, which was released in 1997, or the later version SAP ECC (ERP Core Component). With the release of HANA databases, SAP released S/4 HANA and then S/4 HANA cloud.

SAP applications do not provide webhooks or other polling-based, built-in eventing framework. You will need to build one using BAPI queries and you will need to manage event queries vs. API requests.

REST Conversion

Optionally, if you standardize to REST, when integrating to your customers’ SAP services you’ll likely be required to learn and use the BAPI Java Connector or need to hire/contract with a Java developer.

SAP offers token-based and Basic (username and password) authentication; many enterprise users will want to manage users and roles via SAML SSO solutions.

Bulk & Pagination

SAP’s BAPIs for on-prem deployments support mass data transfer using specific file formats. S/4 HANA Cloud supports bulk operations, though for POST SAP recommends splitting the file at 100k records each and splitting 100k file recording into 2,000 to 5,002 packets with parallel processing and streaming enabled before calling OData Endpoint to optimize performance. For GET, SAP recommends reading data in 5k packets and splitting page data in multiple files—the OData page limit is 5,000, which means you will get a bad request if the page size is more than 4,999.

Why Using Cloud Elements Beats Coding Directly to SAP APIs

You can spend months learning SAP’s BAPIs, bulk limitations, error codes, etc., and creating necessary functionality on top of that, like polling for events. Instead, Cloud Elements removes much of the complexity for you, such as:

  • Normalized REST methods—we’ve done the conversion from SOAP/XML for you
  • Standardized auth experience for developers—more secure integrations with less work
  • 100% API-accessible & one-to-many—for app developers integrating to multiple ERPs
  • Eventing and Bulk frameworks out-of-the-box—why reinvent the wheel?
  • Discovery APIs & standardized query—write one query, use many times
