What You Should Know About NetSuite’s APIs

Oracle NetSuite is a powerful, cloud-based ERP solution with a similarly powerful API. From classic ERP needs like inventory management, accounting ledger, and AR/AP processes to CRM, email automation, human capital management, and global ecommerce, NetSuite coordinates dozens of business processes. For application developers, integration with NetSuite can open new markets and automate your users’ experience.

NetSuite is typically highly-customized for each customer. Before you begin building an integration, here are a few things you should know:


NetSuite does not provide webhooks or other polling-based, built-in eventing frameworks. You will need to build one using SOAP queries and you will need to manage event queries vs. API requests due to the concurrency limitation.


Two major versions are being used, 2016.1 and 2018.1, as well as additional minor versions, 2017.1 and 2019.1, and the latest is 2020.1—to ensure forward compatibility if your customers switch to the newer version.


NetSuite supports both token-based and Basic (username and password) authentication, though Basic can lead to concurrency and security issues. The method to use will depend on your use case and you may need to support both.

Concurrency Limitations

NetSuite allows for 1 API call per user account at any given time; if more than one API call is made at the same time, all will fail and developers need to architect “gating” of API calls for a given user account.

Bulk Framework

NetSuite has asynchronous APIs for moving data in bulk. This can help with moving a large amount of data records depending on your use case. You will need to understand NetSuite queries using SOAP API calls.

REST Conversion

Optionally, if you standardize to REST, you may need to write Scriptlets, which you’ll then load into your customers’ NetSuite sandboxes, when integrating to their NetSuite services.


A strong working knowledge of the SOAP protocol is necessary. Conducting searches, (e.g. searching for a contact by email address), is complex. You may need to write scriptlets (JavaScript exposed as REST) to convert NetSuite’s SOAP protocols to REST in order to support HTTPS calls (prior to March 2020, NetSuite released its Restlet REST service but use requires knowledge of SuiteScript).
